Japanese Kendōka

Prompted by the challenge, the young man inquired, "Is Kendo truly that demanding? How long until I can master its essence?" "Strive for a decade," proposed the master. Unsettled by the proposed timeline, the young man sought a quicker path and urged the master to shorten the duration further. The master, unwavering, suggested, "Thirty years."

In Japan, a father yearned to witness his son become an acclaimed Kendōka in his lifetime. To fulfil this dream, he introduced his son to his friend, a renowned Kendōka from a lineage of masters. Eager to learn, the young man set out on an extraordinary journey to study under this esteemed mentor. Upon scrutiny, the master discerned the young man's immense potential. However, he tested the student's resolve by cautioning, "Learning Kendo is no simple task."

Prompted by the challenge, the young man inquired, "Is Kendo truly that demanding? How long until I can master its essence?"

"Devote yourself entirely to Kendo," replied the master, "and accomplish it within this lifetime." The young man, driven by impatience, pleaded, "But my father wishes to witness my success! How can I achieve this in one lifetime?"

"Then strive for a decade," proposed the master.

Unsettled by the proposed timeline, the young man sought a quicker path and urged the master to shorten the duration further. The master, unwavering, suggested, "Thirty years."

Dismayed by the lengthy commitment, the young man protested, "However long it takes, I'll endure it to master Kendo!"

The master sagely warned, "Rushing will only hinder your progress. Kendo isn't solely about outcomes. Consider dedicating seventy years."

The master's words resonated deeply within him, solidifying the young man's resolve. Determined, he vowed, "While I'm here, I'll strive for progress. I'll dedicate myself to your teachings for as long as necessary." And so, he obediently carried out menial tasks assigned by the master—collecting sticks, transferring water, cooking, and sweeping the floor—every day. Despite three years passing, he felt no improvement in his skills.

In a moment of overwhelming emotions, yearning for his family and feeling unaccomplished, the young man was unexpectedly met by his master, who struck him unconscious with a wooden sword hidden behind himself. This intensive training continued for days, challenging the young man to heighten his awareness and focus. Eventually, the master acknowledged, "You've grasped the essence of Kendo. Observe closely as I demonstrate."

With renewed determination, the young man delved wholeheartedly into his Kendo practice. Over time, his skills flourished, propelling him to become a revered Kendōka, achieving fame and acclaim.

There is no shortcut to learning anything; take your time to learn, and nurture patience and confidence through life's experiences!
