How to quit a bad habit?

A lady had been unsuccessful in quitting her gambling habit for the past decade. Not only had she lost lots of money, but her marriage was also on the verge of breaking up. She attempted burning joss paper to help her quit gambling, but was unsuccessful, hence she consulted Master Cheng Yen for advice.

A lady had been unsuccessful in quitting her gambling habit for the past decade. Not only had she lost lots of money, her marriage was on the verge of breaking up. She attempted burning joss paper to help her quit gambling, but was unsuccessful, hence she consulted Master Cheng Yen for advice.

The Master said:

Quitting gambling is like quitting drugs. Once you have the determination, you will succeed. If one is not determined to do so, nothing can be done even if the Buddha was reborn into this world.

Addiction to gambling shows a lack of determination and destroys one’s life. It is not too late to quit gambling. Only when one has a healthy body and mind, can the family live in harmony. Besides, one can utilise the self-earned experience to assist others in quitting their bad habits, thus bringing meaning to one’s life.

Reflecting upon how well her husband had treated her, how good her children had been, yet she had failed to quit her bad habit, the lady broke down in tears.

Master Cheng Yen comforted her:

Simply turn over a new leaf! Do not let your weakness affect those who love you.
