How to recover from the grief of losing a child?

An old man lamented, "My daughter was in her prime age, yet she died suddenly after falling ill. I'm in my 80s. How sad it is for an elderly person to send off a younger person. I wished I could die in her place!"

An old man came to Master Cheng Yen and lamented, "My daughter was in her prime age, yet she died suddenly after falling ill. I'm in my 80s. How sad it is for an elderly person to send off a younger person. I wished I could die in her place!"

The Master replied:

Some people live to old age while some die young. The lifespan of each person is already predestined. By refusing to let go, you will only make her suffer in a different plane of existence. Recite Buddha’s name when you miss her and pray for her to be blessed with a new body and be reborn into this world again as a good person who helps others.
