Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, “Isn’t it considered true and honest to directly verbalise one's innermost thoughts?

The Master answered:

When one speaks with a kind heart, chooses the words diligently, carefully and tactfully, this reflects a pure heart that is true and honest. Even if others were to speak in an unpleasant manner, if one can see that it stems from a good intention, this would also reflect that the listener has a pure heart that is true and honest.

Human nature is inherently good, but due to bad behaviours, one may invariably hurt others with harsh words. Such a behaviour may not be reflective of one’s innate nature. Hence, those who exhibit a true and honest heart will not take it personally whenever they encounter unpleasant remarks. Furthermore, they will not misinterpret the kindness displayed by others as a deliberate act to hurt them.
