Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, "What is the difference between 'having intention' and 'being mindful'?"

The Master answered:

As different minds work differently, the outcome of "having intention" and "being mindful" can be very different.

When an intentional person listens to others with prejudice, the person will often mistake others' unintentional words as malice. On the contrary, if one is understanding, accommodating, grateful and mindful when listening to others, one will be thankful that others were just reminding him of something.

When listening, we should listen to the reasoning mindfully. By doing so, we will feel at peace within. Don't be harmed by others' unintentional words because of our wrong intentions.
