Why am I so driven to serve and be so involved in Tzu Chi?

A Tzu Chi member shared, "I was asked why I chose to serve and be so involved in Tzu Chi. The truth is, I am not the one who assists Tzu-Chi. On the contrary, I have benefited very much from Tzu Chi. Before joining Tzu Chi, I encountered many hardships and challenges, and it was Tzu Chi that accompanied me through the arduous and helpless period."

Master Cheng Yen responded:

A life without challenges is not true living; it is merely surviving. Life is similar to the sea, lashed upon by continuous waves. It is these episodes of waves that evoke the beauty of life. Without waves, the sea will just be stagnant water. Not only will it lack a sense of beauty, but it will also not be worth seeing. Humans who do not undergo any form of transformation will not understand what freedom is. The cicada, too, has to moult before it can freely take flight.
