Chinese believe in destiny, but Buddhists believe that humans are in control of their fate.

Most people think that things happening in their current life are predestined by past lives, thinking that they are born the way they are meant to be and that fate cannot be changed. Hence, people bemoan their various life experiences helplessly. Such people are easily swayed by their surroundings and do not have a mind of their own. They also refuse to work hard and live by having grievances in their daily life and never strive to change their destiny.

Nevertheless, in the context of Buddhism, our destiny can be altered by controlling our thoughts, values and actions. Past life karma determines the karmic affinities in our present life. What we sow in present life outlines our fate in the next life. Therefore, human beings should use wisdom to shape their fate, which is so-called changing one’s fate and taking control of one’s destiny.

Only we can determine our fate with the karma we sow. If we could continuously seek improvement through hard work and a positive mindset and face life with courage and perseverance, we would be able to create a peaceful and happy life that will lead us towards the right path.
