Bless and Protect the World with Compassion

In the vast expanse of the universe, love is essential for all living beings to co-exist. Selfless, pure, and compassionate love is the key to reversing the common crises humanity faces.

It is often said that life on Earth is filled with suffering, primarily due to the multitude of mental afflictions. However, when we shift our perspective, we can see the beauty and loveliness that exist in every corner of the world. Every day at Tzu Chi, we are immersed in and surrounded by love, for everything we see, hear and feel is filled with love. This kind of love nurtures and revitalizes the world, offering boundless vitality.

Every individual possesses Buddha nature, and the Bodhisattvas spontaneously extend their compassion to rescue those in disasters and guide people out of confusion. The call for "volunteer recruitment" is a constant reminder to inspire and cultivate more intelligent and valuable lives. Through practical actions and mutual influence, we continually strive to walk the path of compassion and wisdom. The journey is dedicated to benefiting humanity and guiding people to be wise, with the twin virtues of merit and wisdom leading the way. This is the essence of "diligence," a commitment to persistently walk the Bodhisattva path.

Tzu Chi has traversed half a century, starting from a small path and gradually expanding its circle with the support of many. The Bodhisattva's influence has extended from Taiwan to the international stage. In mid-August of this year, Tzu Chi was among the organising bodies at the "World Parliament of Religions" held in Chicago. Over 200 religious representatives gathered to share, encourage, and seek progress together. This collaborative effort is crucial at a time when extreme climate conditions are worsening, raising concerns globally. The urgent need for collective efforts to reduce carbon emissions is evident, as indicated by the "climate clock" in New York's Union Square, counting down the time remaining to avert a climate crisis—only six years left.

Every day, the message and direction emphasised are rooted in "compassion" and "benevolence," embodying the concepts of "great compassion for all without distinction" and "universal compassion for all living beings." We must cherish and extend compassion to humans and animals, valuing and respecting plants, expressing gratitude for abundant harvests, and recognising the interconnectedness of all things. In this vast space of the universe, the key is the singular word "love"—a love that is selfless and pure. "Great compassion without boundaries, universal compassion for all living beings" encapsulates the essence of everything in just a few words.

Religion, in essence, serves as the "purpose and education of life." It does not necessarily require belief in Buddhism, but it necessitates having a purpose and direction in life. Every religion has its unique qualities, and there should be mutual respect and blessings among different faiths. Tzu Chi, as one of the 200-plus religions represented at the World Parliament of Religions, expresses gratitude for the recognition and strives for continuous improvement. The significant causality of Buddhism is to educate Bodhisattvas in the human realm. Similarly, our purpose in this world is to selflessly contribute to helping others—the most significant value in our lives.

The educational philosophy of Tzu Chi School is the "Jing Si Dharma Lineage," where "dharma lineage" represents the spiritual essence, and the "school of Buddhism" signifies the path one must follow once stepping through its doors. Bodhisattvas exist because of suffering sentient beings, and Tzu Chi serves Buddhism and all sentient beings. Grateful for the broad and smooth path paved by Tzu Chi volunteers, we engage in actions that align with our principles, avoiding conflicts with others and the world. If criticisms arise, we should view them as aiding factors, reminding ourselves to be vigilant and developing resilience to navigate life's challenges. People can propagate Dharma, but not otherwise. We should be genuine, truthful, practical, kind, and loving in all our actions and interactions. Sincerity, simplicity, selflessness, and steady progress should prevail, making charity more common internationally.

Having a religious faith is not about seeking blessings but about creating blessings, much like not being able to withdraw money from a bank without first depositing it. Time should be seized, and every second should be spent engaging in meaningful conversations and performing virtuous deeds. A mind that embraces the vast emptiness is free from vexations, and a heart boundless as myriad worlds transcends distinctions of nations or races. We should cause no harm to others and make no mistakes in our actions. Maintain a heart that is wide, pure, and guilt-free.

The counting-down of the "climate clock" serves as a warning. Advocating vegetarianism, environmental protection, and cherishing all life forms are crucial directions to follow at this moment. Mind purification and harmonising society require the collective efforts of Tzu Chi volunteers. Tzu Chi volunteers must combine their strengths to guide more individuals and pass on the energy of love through generations to ensure the continuity of wisdom life in people. May all be more mindful!
