Why is "happy" also called "rejoice"? Because it means opening up our minds, pouring out the filth and troubles in the heart so that the mind can take in the delight and joy of the beaming sun. Living in such a wholesome and bright way is to "rejoice". However, unbeknownst to many, people are always seeking trouble and hoarding all kinds of mess and garbage in their minds. They then close the door to their minds, blocking out the bright sunlight, and let the garbage stink and rot in their darkened mind.
In spiritual cultivation, we must learn to open our hearts while keeping them as clear as flawless mirrors. Even though we may not always be able to keep an open mind, we must at least open it up little by little every day and gradually get rid of our troubles. We must be even more mindful not to close our minds too quickly. We may not have accumulated troubles, but we must also ensure that "dust" (minor unwholesome thoughts) does not creep in without us knowing.
At the beginning of spiritual cultivation, we need to be diligent. And as we strive harder, our true nature will be revealed. When it comes to "putting into practice", it will be the time when we demonstrate "cultivation without cultivation and true cultivation without cultivation". This is of a very different level. We do good deeds sincerely while avoiding creating bad karma. Our hearts will be bright and sunny when we spare no effort to strengthen our spiritual cultivation. And we will find our way back to our true nature, where wisdom and compassion proliferate thoroughly.
