A taxi driver who was driving his car had intended to go shopping. When he pulled over and opened the car door, a motorcyclist ran into his vehicle instantly! The injured person was a policeman who went into a coma due to severe injuries. The policeman's wife, who often felt unwell, was later diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The police force filed a court case after the car accident. The driver lost the case and had to pay TWD 18 million in compensation. The driver later committed suicide because he could not afford to pay the compensation, and his house was seized. After being informed of the tragedy, Tzu Chi volunteers visited the deceased driver's family to show their concern and better understand the family's situation. The driver's wife was a thin and pale woman. She had to take care of three children but did not know where to stay and how to survive in the future.
The driver's wife said she held no grudges against her husband and was very sad to learn what happened to the policeman. She told the Tzu Chi commissioners she wanted to see the other party and send them the taxi's insurance compensation of TWD 600k.
The commissioners then accompanied the driver's wife to the policeman’s home. As it is more difficult to be cold and detached when we meet someone in person. After meeting each other, the sight of the driver’s wife saddened the policeman’s wife. The latter decided to cancel all claims and the seizure of the house. The driver's wife insisted on giving the policeman’s wife the insurance compensation, but she rejected her sincerely and said, “Keep this money for your family."
After much interaction with mutual understanding between both parties, the policeman's wife donated TWD 400k on top of the insurance compensation to Tzu Chi to promote Project HOPE. The policeman's father thought it was a good idea, so they made a monetary contribution in the name of the policeman's wife, who became a Tzu Chi honorary board member.
It shows that bad affinities can be reversed by turning hatred into love. Both women suffered from misfortune but could understand each other - this is the heart of universal compassion. If we can bear this in mind at all times, there will be no resentment in life, and we will be able to display the warmth of humanity.
