Lumbini’s First Mega Book Club Planned and Executed in Three Days

Walking along the country roads, early in the morning, 16 volunteers went into the village of Laxmipur to visit the villagers from door to door to invite them to the upcoming book club.

(Tell them) if you can come and then you must know how many of them so that we can allocate the seat for them.

Gyan Prabha School is located in the village of Laxmipur. Moti, the school principal from the same village, and the reading guide of this book club, joined the invitation team on this day.

Principal of Gyan Prabha School, Moti Lal Yadav: If we just call them “please come”, so they became confused, “why they are asking us all the time”. So we better go to be familiar with the family, talk with them and forge a strong relation.

Nepal volunteer, Krishna: We went to the village to invite villagers and then, they asked us. “Why these foreigners are inviting us”, “What do we get?”, “What do they distribute to us?” . Then we said that we will share the teachings of Master Cheng Yen.

Tzu Chi Malaysia volunteer, Liang Kwai Yim: Because we don't speak the same language here, we need local volunteers to assist us. We guide and accompany them, and they interact with the residents.

Wearing headscarves and aprons, the food preparation team was officially established. Early in the morning of the event day, volunteers gathered at the home of Krishna, who lives in the same village, to prepare local breakfast for the participants.

Nepal volunteer, Krishna:Since 2 am today, me and my wife, two sisters-in-law, my sister and brother, Tzu Chi volunteers, and local volunteers prepared puri and tarkari. My family is happy that we can help to prepare food.

Tzu Chi Malaysia volunteer, Choo Lay Hong: At first, I was worried that they would not be used to it, because they would feel hot if they had to wear masks, headscarves, and aprons, but it turned out that they were very pure in thought and accepted it with pleasure. We want them to know that they can come together and contribute, and women can cook together at home to bond with everyone.

The book club was prepared in just three days from planning to execution. The volunteers were united and hoped that the book club would benefit the villagers.
