Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, “How can we settle our minds while busy at work? I often think of how to help others and contribute to society, and not just work for money or material gains. However, I experience a lot of work pressure, so I often feel that (I’m contradicting myself).”
The Master answered:
It is really not easy for one to keep a calm mind while one is busy at work. Having a hectic work life is inevitable if one wishes to become successful in one’s career. It takes effort to achieve the state where even though we are busy at work, we can still keep a calm inner mind.
There is a saying that goes, “You must take things easy, then you will be able to let go.” If we take things too hard, we will never be able to let go, and this will lead to a troubled mind. Then, we will feel vexed while busy doing work. When we are physically busy and mentally vexed at the same time, it will be even harder for us to settle our minds!
So how do we keep our minds calm? Firstly, we must open up and broaden our hearts. When we have a broad heart, we will find that the world is vast and broad. If we bear a grateful heart, we will be content, understanding and tolerant. If we practise these virtues every day, our minds will remain calm and still, no matter how busy our days are. (This is the one and only way to achieve a calm and peaceful mind).
